TOKYO, May 28 (News On Japan) - Japan’s first law dedicated specifically to artificial intelligence has been passed by the Upper House of the Diet, with the so-called AI Promotion Law formally enacted in May.
The legislation aims to accelerate the use of AI technologies and strengthen the government's organizational framework. A key feature of the law is the creation of a new “AI Strategy Headquarters” led by the prime minister and comprising all cabinet ministers. The law also mandates the formulation of a national “AI Basic Plan” to guide development and applications of the technology.
The government will be empowered to investigate and issue guidance to businesses if AI is used for criminal purposes, such as the creation of fake videos or other malicious acts.
However, the law does not include any criminal penalties for such abuses, drawing attention to the limits of its enforceability.
