SAPPORO, Sep 15 (News On Japan) - Sapporo Rainbow Pride was held over the weekend in central Sapporo, bringing together around 900 participants in a show of support for a more inclusive society that embraces sexual diversity.
The event advocates for the elimination of discrimination against sexual minorities, including those who identify as gay or transgender, whose gender identity differs from their physical sex.
First held in 1996, the Sapporo event has become an annual initiative. This year, about 900 participants—including members of the LGBTQ community and their supporters—marched through the city holding rainbow flags, the symbol of diversity.
Yumiko Yanagitani, chairperson of the Sapporo Rainbow Pride Executive Committee, stated: "I believe society is beginning to change based on the premise that LGBTQ people exist. But I also want the LGBTQ community to open their hearts further so that we can all live together in a more inclusive society."
At the end of the parade, participants simultaneously released iridescent soap bubbles into the air, filling the sky with rainbow-colored reflections.
