TOKYO, Oct 21 (News On Japan) - Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Sanae Takaichi and Japan Innovation Party (Ishin) leader Hirofumi Yoshimura held a joint press conference in Tokyo after signing a coalition agreement. The deal aims to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and policy alignment on economic reform and national security.
LDP leader Noda of the Constitutional Democratic Party said, "We support the direction of reducing the number of seats, but there are steps that need to be followed. It is important not to forget the issue of money and politics and to see it through properly," indicating that discussions on seat reduction and political funding reform could proceed simultaneously.
Meanwhile, Komeito leader Saito argued that if 50 seats are to be cut, it would be appropriate to reduce 30 from single-seat constituencies and 20 from proportional representation, pushing back against proposals that focus solely on cutting proportional seats.
Communist Party secretary-general Koike criticized the plan outright, saying, "It will exclude minority opinions and parties, making it even harder to reflect diverse public views."
