Japan Series Opens on Saturday as Hawks Aim for First Championship in Five Years

FUKUOKA, Oct 25 (News On Japan) - The Japan Series will open on October 25th, with the Pacific League champion Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks facing off against the Central League champion Hanshin Tigers. As the Hawks seek their first championship in five years, not only the players but also the people of Fukuoka are charged with excitement.

Four days after their hard-fought Climax Series, the Hawks held practice at their home ground, Mizuho PayPay Dome, on the morning of October 24th. Among the players sweating through drills was Kensuke Kondoh, who had been removed from the roster on September 28th due to a left rib injury. Kondoh, who watched the Climax Series with frustration from the sidelines, was seen swinging his bat with a smile, saying he had been working on rehabilitation to ensure he could perform well when called upon. "I’m grateful to everyone for getting us to the Japan Series, and I’ve worked hard to be ready to contribute," he said, his determination clear on the eve of the series.

In Fukuoka’s Tenjin shopping district, local shops were also preparing for the championship. A large papier-mâché kusudama ball—decorated with the words “Congratulations on advancing through the Climax Series—Onward to the Championship!”—was being readied for the victory celebration. Craftsmen carefully expanded and aligned large congratulatory letters reading “Japan’s Best,” to be pasted onto the sphere that will burst open if the Hawks win the title.

At another shop, staff created commemorative tape dispensers inspired by the team’s season slogan “Peace.” The dispensers will be given to customers who spend more than 1,100 yen for three days starting the day after the championship victory. “We’re confident they’ll win—hopefully with four straight victories,” said one shopkeeper with a laugh.

Nearby, an izakaya restaurant prepared to offer a 10% discount on food bills for three days following a championship win. Tables and chairs were being arranged to allow fans to watch and celebrate the games together. “We’re ready to make the kusudama explode—this is the last battle, so we’ll go all out,” the owner said.

Shoppers and pedestrians in the area also expressed high hopes for the Hawks. “I’m excited to see Fukuoka come alive again,” said one resident. Another added with a smile, “I used to support another team, but after moving here I became a Hawks fan. My husband is a Hanshin supporter, so it’s going to be quite the battle.”

Coach Kokubo, encouraged by the fans’ support, pledged to lead his team with unity and determination. “Whether we cry or smile, it all ends within a week,” he said. “We’ll give everything we have left and aim to seize the top spot in Japan.”

With the stage set for a dramatic clash between the Hawks and the Tigers, the Japan Series will begin on October 25th at Mizuho PayPay Dome in Fukuoka.
