Akihabara Maids Join Traditional Water-Sprinkling Event

TOKYO - Maids from Akihabara maid cafes joined shrine maidens from Kanda Myojin and members of the public on August 8 to sprinkle water across the shrine grounds in Tokyo, calling out "Cool down!" as they took part in a summer tradition aimed at easing the midsummer heat.

The annual "Uchimizukko Daishugo! 2026" event was held at Kanda Myojin in Sotokanda under clear blue skies and strong midsummer sunshine.

Participants used the traditional practice of uchimizu, in which water is sprinkled over the ground in an effort to cool the surrounding area.

The event began as a summer attraction for the Akihabara district and marked its 23rd year in 2026.

Despite the participants' calls for cooler conditions, the ground surface temperature rose during the event rather than falling.
