Typhoon No. 17 Weakens as It Tracks East Over Pacific

TOKYO - Typhoon No. 17 was moving east near Minamitorishima on August 14 and is expected to continue weakening before becoming a tropical depression by August 16.

As of 3 p.m. on August 14, the typhoon had a central atmospheric pressure of 994 hectopascals, maximum sustained winds of 18 meters per second and maximum gusts of 25 meters per second.

Satellite imagery showed that the storm lacked the clearly defined spiral cloud pattern typically associated with a developed typhoon. A relatively small area of clouds could be seen near and northeast of the storm's center.

Typhoon No. 17 was moving slowly eastward and is forecast to continue on that course while gradually losing strength.

The storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression near Minamitorishima by 3 p.m. on August 16.

As of 4 a.m. on August 26, the typhoon was located about 80 kilometers west-northwest of Okinoerabu Island and was moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour.
