CHIBA - The death toll from record-breaking torrential rain in Chiba Prefecture has risen to 10, with 29 people injured, more than 1,500 homes damaged and one person still missing three days after the disaster.
Chiba Prefecture said 10 men and women have died in incidents including becoming trapped inside vehicles on flooded roads, while 29 people have suffered serious or minor injuries.
One of those who died was a man in his 30s from Chuo Ward, Chiba city, who used a generator inside his home during a power outage and died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the prefectural government.
In Wakaba Ward, Chiba city, one man remains missing. Police and other authorities continued searching for him on August 16 but were unable to locate him.
Damage has been confirmed at 1,541 homes, including structural damage and flooding above and below floor level.
Transportation disruptions are also continuing.
East Japan Railway said operations remain suspended on part of the Sotobo Line. Replacement bus services will operate from August 17 until train services resume.
Authorities have also confirmed around 2,500 abandoned vehicles in Chiba city alone.
Of about 500 vehicles obstructing traffic, around 300 have already been moved.
A series of rear-end collisions involving abandoned vehicles has also been reported, while removing the vehicles can take time. Chiba city and other authorities are attaching safety tape to stranded vehicles as a measure to help prevent further collisions.
