NAGOYA - Nagoya's municipal subway will introduce a contactless credit card payment service at all 87 stations from September 3, allowing passengers to pass through ticket gates simply by tapping a compatible card.
A demonstration of the new system was held on August 17 at Mizuho Undojo Higashi Station on the Meijo Line ahead of the launch.
About 150 ticket gates across the subway network will be equipped to accept contactless credit card payments.
The service is intended to improve convenience for passengers, particularly foreign visitors who may not have local transportation cards.
"We believe this will allow inbound visitors to use the subway more easily when they come for events such as the Asian Games and Asian Para Games," said Shintaro Murayama, an assistant manager in the sales division of the Nagoya City Transportation Bureau.
The service will begin on September 3.
Meitetsu has also introduced contactless credit card boarding at 13 stations, including Chubu Centrair International Airport Station.
