AICHI - A Turkish national has been arrested on suspicion of performing illegal drift driving on a public road in Yatomi, Aichi Prefecture, as police prepare to strengthen enforcement around facilities linked to the Asian Games and Asian Para Games.
Benze Shafak, a 29-year-old Turkish company employee, was arrested on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act and other laws.
Police suspect Shafak drove a passenger car on a road in the Kusunoki district of Yatomi in July and performed so-called drift driving, deliberately causing the tires to slide sideways while making sharp turns, together with another vehicle driven by a different person.
Police have not disclosed whether Shafak has admitted or denied the allegations.
Investigators believe Shafak had repeatedly engaged in drift driving with associates in the surrounding area and are examining the circumstances in greater detail.
Facilities to accommodate athletes participating in the Asian Games and Asian Para Games, which are scheduled to be held from September, have been established in the Nagoya Port area, including near the site of the alleged offense.
Aichi Prefectural Police plan to strengthen enforcement against illegal activities in the area, including drift driving, ahead of the sporting events.
