TOKYO - Princess Aiko attended the opening ceremony of an international conference on semiconductor physics on the morning of August 17, expressing condolences for those killed in the Kumamoto earthquake and torrential rain in Chiba Prefecture before addressing researchers from around the world.
The international conference, held once every two years, brings together researchers in semiconductor physics from 34 countries and regions.
"I believe it is highly significant that active discussions can help show the way toward advances in science and technology and the realization of a better society, while also fostering new forms of cooperation that transcend academic fields and national borders," Princess Aiko said.
At the beginning of her remarks, she expressed condolences for those who died in the Kumamoto earthquake and the heavy rain in Chiba, as well as sympathy for people affected by the disasters.
"I am concerned that many people have been forced to live as evacuees during the severe heat day after day," she said. "I sincerely hope that recovery and reconstruction in the affected areas will progress and that peaceful daily life will return as soon as possible."
It was the second time Princess Aiko has attended an international conference and delivered formal remarks.
