TOKYO - A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck the greater Tokyo region shortly after 2 a.m. on August 23, registering a maximum intensity of lower 5 on Japan's seven-level seismic scale in Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba and Tokyo, with no threat of a tsunami.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at around 2:00 a.m., with its epicenter in southern Ibaraki Prefecture.
The focus was estimated to be about 70 kilometers below the surface, while the magnitude was estimated at 5.9.
An emergency earthquake warning was issued for the quake.
Strong shaking was also observed in central Tokyo, including the Shinjuku district.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami from the earthquake.
