TOKYO - Toyota Motor plans to introduce passenger vehicles equipped with advanced automated driving technology from 2028, allowing drivers to travel with almost no manual operation, including taking their hands off the steering wheel on ordinary roads.

The automaker unveiled the new autonomous-driving roadmap on August 27, saying it aims to equip privately owned passenger vehicles with a driver-assistance system known as Level 2++, which uses artificial intelligence to make driving decisions autonomously.

Under the system, drivers will be able to take their hands off the steering wheel even while traveling on general roads, greatly reducing the need for direct driver operation.

Toyota is also targeting Level 4 autonomous driving for commercial vehicles by 2030.

Level 4 technology allows vehicles to operate entirely without human driving intervention under specified conditions.
