Vladivostok - Russian President Vladimir Putin said tax incentives on the Russian-held islands claimed by Japan have been successful, using a speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok to highlight economic development in Russia's Far East.
Speaking at a plenary session of the forum, Putin said the tax incentive measures introduced on the Northern Territories, as the disputed islands are known in Japan, "have achieved success."
The plenary session was attended by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Mongolian Prime Minister Gombojav Zandanshatar and Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.
Putin described the Eastern Economic Forum as a gathering place for business leaders and experts from across the Asia-Pacific region.
He also emphasized the Russian government's development strategy for the region, saying Russia's Far East is "a center of strong growth."
