SHIGA - A rare blue-and-black bee known as the "blue bee that brings happiness" has become a popular attraction at Chojuji Temple in Konan, Shiga Prefecture, where visitors are gathering to catch a glimpse of the colorful insect.
The bee, known as the blue-banded bee, is distinguished by its striking blue markings against a black body. Measuring about 1.5 centimeters in length, the species is designated as endangered in some regions and has earned its reputation as a symbol of happiness because of its rarity and beauty.
The bees began visiting Chojuji Temple about five years ago, attracted by nectar from flowers planted within the temple grounds. They have since returned around this time each year, with the first sighting of this season recorded in mid-August.
Visitors hoping to attract a little happiness have been following the bees through the temple grounds, cameras in hand, trying to capture photographs of the elusive blue insects.
