KAGOSHIMA, Jan 14 (News On Japan) - An eruption from the Ontake crater on the remote Japanese island of Suwanosejima, south west of Kagoshima, at 0:22 AM on Sunday morning, sent volcanic debris flying more than one kilometer from the center.
Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued a level 3 volcanic alert, which prohibits entry onto the mountain.
It is recommended to exercise caution within a 2-kilometer perimeter surrounding the Ontake crater, owing to the potential for large ballistic rocks being dispersed following the eruption.
On the downwind side, attention is required not only for volcanic ash but also for the possibility of small ballistic projectiles being carried by the wind.

There have been no reports of damage so far, according to government authorities.
