Aug 30 (NHK) - The UN Security Council is holding a closed-door emergency meeting to discuss its response to North Korea's latest missile launch. The Security Council convened on Tuesday at the request of Japan, the United States and South Korea.
North Korea fired a ballistic missile from the suburbs of Pyongyang early on Tuesday.
State-run media say the country test-fired a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile. The US Department of Defense says in its preliminary analysis that it was an intermediate-range ballistic missile.
The missile is believed to have travelled for more than 2,700 kilometers and passed over northern Japan before falling into the Pacific Ocean.
Before the meeting, Japan's Ambassador to the UN Koro Bessho said it's important that the Security Council sends a clear and unanimous message to Pyongyang.
Japan and the United States are calling for tougher measures, while China and Russia are expected to focus on implementing the existing sanctions.
