Sep 01 (NHK) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his British counterpart, Theresa May, have released joint statements on security and economic cooperation after their talks in Tokyo.
The 2 leaders reaffirmed that their countries will strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and take their global, strategic partnership to the next stage.
They also stressed the need to maintain an international order based on the rule of law, in light of China's growing assertiveness in the East and South China Seas.
They expressed strong opposition to any unilateral attempt to change the status quo through force or coercion.
The leaders said North Korea's nuclear and missile programs pose a threat to the entire world.
They pledged to work together with friendly nations and allies to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and fully enforce UN Security Council resolutions.
The 2 countries have also agreed to beef up security cooperation.
The Japanese side welcomed increased British engagement in the Asia Pacific region, including sending aircraft carriers there. Japan said it will consider sending aircraft and naval vessels to Britain for joint drills.
