Oct 18 (NHK) - People dressed as samurai warriors have marched in a procession at a World Heritage site in Nikko, north of Tokyo.
About 800 local residents clad in 17th century costumes took part in the parade at Toshogu Shrine on Tuesday.
The event, held every spring and autumn, recreates the transfer of the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, from a shrine in central Japan to Nikko.
Participants marched slowly along a one-kilometer approach to the shrine. The procession is centered around a portable shine that is believed to carry the spirit of the shogun. The shrine weighs more than one ton.
