Oct 31 (NHK) - Typhoon Saola was downgraded to an extratropical low-pressure system off northeastern Japan at midnight on Sunday (3 p.m. GMT) after moving off the country's Pacific coast.
The season's 22nd typhoon caused downpours in many regions of the country on Sunday. The island of Izu Oshima, south of Tokyo, had 75 millimeters of rainfall per hour in the afternoon.
At Miyazaki airport in the Kyushu southwestern region, 24-hour rainfall to 7:40 a.m. totaled 462.5 millimeters.
According to Japan Airlines <9201> and ANA Holdings Inc.'s <9202> All Nippon Airways, a total of 59 flights, mostly using airports in Kyushu, were canceled, affecting around 4,700 passengers.
Kyushu Railway Co. <9142>, or JR Kyushu, halted train operations from the first runs for the day on part of its Nippo and Nichinan lines.
