Aug 12 (NHK) - Japanese police carried out a climbing safety campaign on Mount Fuji on Mountain Day on Saturday.
August 11th is one of Japan's national holidays. Many climbers gathered on the 5th station of the country's highest mountain, the starting point of the climb to the peak.
Police officers handed out fliers urging climbers to wear a helmet and the correct climbing clothes and to submit a trekking itinerary to police.
The officers also recommended that climbers walk in a group so that no one gets left behind.
Mount Fuji straddles Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures in central Japan.
Police say 2 accidents have been reported on the Yamanashi side since July 1st. In one of them, a 70-year-old man died.
A senior Yamanashi police officer said he wants climbers to cooperate with each other to ensure safe and enjoyable climbing.
