Softbank, Toyota launch mobility services venture

Oct 05, 2018 (NHK) - Japanese telecom firm Softbank is partnering with Toyota for a venture that could help to usher in a new era of mobility. They want to use automated driving to transform the way people move around and the services they enjoy.

Their new company, called MONET Technologies, will start by offering ride-hailing services to firms and local governments.

Looking further ahead, the joint venture hopes to unveil some big innovations in the second half of the next decade.

These include vehicles that can deliver food prepared en route, mobile offices, and automated hospital shuttles that perform medical checks on board.

The venture will also consider expanding the services overseas.

At a joint news conference on Thursday, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said, "Technological innovation has completely changed the concept of cars. Our rivals are making some big changes, and the rules of competition are changing, too."

Chairman and CEO of Softbank Group, Masayoshi Son, told reporters, "Toyota is a global leader in the field of mobility, and Softbank is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence. Our partnership will create mobility for a new era."
