Nov 15 (NHK) - Japan's economy contracted for the first time in 2 quarters. Government officials say a string of natural disasters in the period dented exports and consumer spending.
Gross domestic product in the July-September period shrank an inflation-adjusted 0.3 percent from the previous quarter. That translates to an annual contraction of 1.2 percent.
Officials say exports dropped 1.8 percent due to an earthquake and typhoons. One powerful storm in September forced the temporary closure of Kansai International Airport, which serves as a logistics hub.
The disasters also dampened foreign tourists' spending, which is included in exports.
Personal spending fell 0.1 percent as the weather discouraged consumers from visiting department stores and tourist spots.
Public spending tumbled 1.9 percent. Corporate investment in facilities and equipment fell 0.2 percent.
