Feb 16 (NHK) - The former head of Japan's largest university admitted to tax evasion in a Tokyo District Court hearing on Tuesday.
Nihon University's former Chairman Tanaka Hidetoshi testified that he has no intention of fighting the charges.
Prosecutors said in their opening statement that Tanaka accepted kickbacks from a former board member, who has also been indicted for breach of trust. The illegal payments were channeled through Tanaka's wife for business related to the university.
Prosecutors also said Tanaka received huge sums from the former head of the medical corporation.
The prosecutors said Tanaka deliberately excluded the cash he accepted from tax declarations and kept the money at home.
Tanaka is accused of concealing about 118 million yen, or just over 1 million dollars, in income and evading 52 million yen, or roughly 450,000 dollars, in income tax in 2018 and 2020.
