TOKYO, Jan 18 (News On Japan) - The amount spent by foreign visitors to Japan last year reached about 5.3 trillion yen, a 9.9% increase compared to 2019, setting a new record high.
The government had set a target in March last year to 'achieve 5 trillion yen at an early stage,' which has already been achieved.
By region, Taiwan leads with 778.6 billion yen, followed by China with 759.9 billion yen, South Korea with 744.4 billion yen, the United States with 606.2 billion yen, and Hong Kong with 479.5 billion yen. These five regions account for over 60% of the total spending.
The average expenditure per foreign traveler was 212,000 yen, a 33.8% increase compared to before the pandemic.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of foreign
visitors to Japan last year was 25,066,100 people.
The number of visitors and their spending from China, which used to be the largest by country, continues to fall significantly below pre-pandemic levels. The extent to which travelers from China will recover is a point of focus going forward.
