Kumamoto, Jun 04, 2025 (News On Japan) - A woman involved in cat rescue activities in Kumamoto City was found to have kept the remains of around 100 cats at her residence, raising concerns over a breakdown in multi-animal care.
The discovery was made at the woman's home in the northern part of Kumamoto City, where she had been known for engaging in cat protection efforts.
In mid-May, a couple living in Kumamoto Prefecture had entrusted two of their pet cats to the woman. When they later visited the home after being told that one of the cats had died, they found the animal’s body with parts of its skin missing.
One of the cat owners said, "Even if it's dead, I just want it back. I want to take it home."
Following the report, on June 2nd, members of the woman’s organization and another rescue group, accompanied by police, rescued about 10 surviving cats from the premises. At the same time, they found approximately 100 dead cats.
The organization the woman belongs to has since issued an apology on social media. Kumamoto City’s Animal Welfare Center is currently investigating the details of the case.
