66-Year-Old Man Arrested for Sixth Candy Theft

NAGOYA, Jul 29 (News On Japan) - A 66-year-old man has been arrested for repeatedly stealing sweets from an unmanned store in Nagoya, with police suspecting him of targeting the same shop on six occasions since the beginning of the year.

Security footage from the early morning of July 14th shows a man in flashy clothing entering the self-service store and heading straight for the display of snacks near the entrance. Without hesitation, he began grabbing handfuls of candy and cookies, stuffing them into a black bag he had brought with him.

Ignoring the surroundings, he continued putting items into his bag and left the store without paying.

According to the shop owner, the value of the stolen items that day was around 500 yen and included candies and cookies.

"This kind of behavior is just heartbreaking. It’s truly disappointing," the owner said.

The incident was not the first. The same man is believed to have stolen from the store five times before, making this the sixth known theft.

In one incident in May, he was seen browsing the snacks near the entrance when a warning alarm suddenly sounded in the store. Startled but undeterred, he proceeded to sweep the items into his bag and left.

The shop owner estimates that nearly 100 items, including gum and cookies, have been stolen in total, amounting to roughly 10,000 yen in losses.

On July 28th, police arrested Masahiro Koyama, an unemployed resident of Nagoya, on suspicion of stealing sweets from the store. Investigators are now examining whether he is the same individual captured on the store’s security cameras.
