TOKYO - Prince Hisahito, the eldest son of Crown Prince Akishino, will ride a 112-year-old restored ceremonial carriage at his coming-of-age ceremony in September.
Finished in a deep reddish-brown and emblazoned with the imperial chrysanthemum crest, the coach—known as Ceremonial Carriage No. 4—will be used on September 6. Such ceremonial carriages are deployed for major imperial rites, including the Emperor’s enthronement.
Carriage No. 4 is a two-horse coach built domestically in Taisho 2 (1913), measuring about 4.5 meters in length. Akishino also rode the same carriage at his coming-of-age ceremony 40 years ago.
On September 6, after the rite in which he dons the coronet marking adulthood, Hisahito will travel within the Imperial Palace grounds in full court robes aboard the carriage.
