Wakayama, Sep 02 (News On Japan) - The traditional dolphin and whale drive hunt resumed in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, with around 10 Risso's dolphins captured on the opening day.
Drive hunting is a traditional method in which boats surround pods of dolphins or whales offshore and drive them into a cove where they are captured.
On the first day of the season, September 1st, nine fishing boats carrying local fishermen departed shortly after 5 a.m. While anti-whaling activists were seen nearby holding placards, there were no major disruptions or incidents.
The hunt located a pod of Risso's dolphins about 8 kilometers offshore and drove approximately 10 animals into the cove for capture.
The dolphins will be auctioned and shipped to market, with the drive hunt season continuing through the end of April next year.
