SHIZUOKA, Sep 05 (News On Japan) - As of 11:20 a.m. on September 5th, operations on the Tokaido Shinkansen were suspended due to heavy rain. Northbound services between Shin-Osaka and Toyohashi stations and southbound services between Tokyo and Nagoya stations have been halted. Railway operators warned that depending on weather conditions, further suspensions and delays may occur.
Air travel remains unaffected for now. As of 10:30 a.m. on September 5th, both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways reported that flights were operating on schedule with no cancellations planned. However, heavy rain is forecast to continue from the Kanto region through Tokai, raising the possibility of disruptions later in the day.
Authorities are also warning of rising river levels caused by torrential rain. In Aichi Prefecture, rivers such as the Aizumagawa in Kariya and the Sakaigawa have already exceeded the "evacuation judgment water level." Camera footage installed by the prefecture shows a steady rise in water levels since the morning.
In Shizuoka City, the Nagao River, which showed little flow on September 4th, had risen close to the levees by the 5th. Water levels at the confluence of the Inasegawa and the Fujikawa rivers in Fujinomiya have also risen compared with the previous day.
