Sep 08 (News On Japan) - An AI system capable of swiftly detecting abnormalities in massive sets of CT (computed tomography) images was introduced at a hospital in Osaka and unveiled to the press on September 8th.
The system, called ERATS, was developed by an Osaka-based medical equipment manufacturer and has been installed at the Osaka General Medical Center.
According to the center, emergency physicians must treat patients as they arrive while simultaneously identifying abnormalities within hundreds of CT images, a process that has traditionally placed a heavy burden on medical staff.
The AI can rapidly process more than 1,000 images and detect abnormalities in under 10 seconds, significantly reducing the time needed to reach a diagnosis. The center expects the technology will improve survival rates in emergency cases.
This is the first time such AI technology has been introduced into a clinical emergency setting in Japan. The hospital said it will continue clinical research and aims to promote nationwide adoption in the coming years.
