KYOTO, Oct 09 (News On Japan) - In Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, workers carried out the traditional practice of “komo-maki,” wrapping straw mats around pine trees to protect them from harmful insects as the autumn season deepens. The activity takes place each year around “Kanro” (Cold Dew), one of the 24 solar terms marking the seasonal transition toward winter.
About 100 pine trees in the park were wrapped with straw mats woven from rice straw. The komo serve as traps for insects seeking warmth during the colder months, preventing them from damaging the trees. The mats will remain in place through the winter and be removed around “Keichitsu” (Awakening of Insects) in March next year.
