TOKYO, Oct 10 (News On Japan) - Tokyo has confirmed its first case of a dog infected with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), a potentially fatal disease transmitted by ticks. It is the first time an animal infection has been recorded in the capital.
SFTS is primarily spread through tick bites and can cause fever, coughing, vomiting, and other symptoms in both humans and animals. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the dog — kept as a pet in the city — developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea last month. When the owner examined the animal, they found a tick attached to its body. Subsequent testing confirmed infection with SFTS.
The dog died on September 27. Authorities said the animal had pre-existing health conditions, and it is unclear whether SFTS was the direct cause of death.
Until now, there have been only two confirmed cases of human infection with SFTS in Tokyo. The latest case marks the first detection in an animal. The metropolitan government is urging people to take precautions outdoors — including using tick repellents and checking both themselves and their pets carefully — to avoid being bitten.
