Oct 24 (NHK) - Japan is to stop providing China with government aid next year and start jointly helping developing countries.
Japan started providing China with Official Development Assistance in 1979. More than 26 billion dollars in grant aid, loan and technical cooperation has contributed to China's economic growth.
Tokyo has already stopped providing new long-term loans and ceased starting new large grant aid projects. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to propose completely halting any new projects from April next year, when he meets Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Friday.
The aid has helped China build infrastructure, such as roads, airports and power plants.
It's also been used for improving environment, fighting infectious diseases, and training people.
