Huge dead sperm whale found on beach in Japan

Mar 09 (NHK) - A huge dead sperm whale has been found on a beach in eastern Japan.

The whale, measuring approximately 16 meters in length, is apparently male and seems to have been dead for about a month.

A researcher from the National Museum of Nature and Science, who examined the carcass on Friday, said it is one of the largest sperm whales found in the sea around Japan.

The expert said information such as the whale's age could be determined from its teeth.

The location where the whale washed up in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture is near a popular tourist spot. Prefectural officials will consider how to deal with the carcass.

A local resident in his 70s said he has found all sorts of items washed ashore, but it is the first time he has seen such a big whale.
