Korean Air to drastically cut flights to Japan

Aug 21 (NHK) - Korean Air says it will suspend more flights from South Korea to Japan, due to lower travel demand amid worsening bilateral ties between the two countries.

The airline said on Tuesday that it will fully suspend flights between the southern city of Busan and Japan's Kansai Airport in Osaka Prefecture from September.

From November, it plans to cancel flights between the southern resort island Jeju and Japan's Narita and Kansai airports.

The airline is also planning to suspend three routes between Incheon Airport and Japan's Komatsu, Kagoshima and Asahikawa airports for about a month starting in late September.

Korean Air officials say the company will temporarily reduce the number of flights on five routes, including those between Incheon and Fukuoka, as well as those between Busan and Narita.

The airline has already announced that it will suspend flights between Busan and the northern Japanese city of Sapporo from September.

The airline officials say that in order to offset lower demand to Japan, they will increase the number of flights to Southeast Asia, Oceania, and China.
