Govt., LDP agree on 300,000 yen handout over outbreak

Apr 04, 2020 (NHK) - Japan's Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and the main governing Liberal Democratic Party have agreed to give roughly 2,800 dollars to households whose income has fallen to a certain level due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Abe and LDP policy chief Kishida Fumio agreed on the 300,000-yen cash handout on Friday as part of discussions on an emergency economic package.

Kishida later told reporters that the amount was decided in consideration of various factors such as the average number of people in Japanese households.

He said he told Abe that the cash must be provided swiftly, and that the party is leaving the details of the handout to the government.

Kishida said the LDP will continue discussions with the government on the size of the economic package and other responses to the outbreak.
