May 17 (NHK) - Japanese health authorities reported 57 new cases of coronavirus infection and 19 deaths on Saturday.
The number of confirmed infections in the country stands at 16,310.
An additional 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined in Yokohama, brings the total to 17,022.
The country's death toll stands at 761, including 13 from the cruise ship.
By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list with 5,050 cases, followed by Osaka with 1,770, Kanagawa with 1,261 and Hokkaido with 1,006.
Officials say there have been 317 confirmed cases at airport quarantine stations and other points of entry.
Fourteen cases were found among those who returned from China on government-chartered planes.
Health officials say 236 people remain in serious condition, including four from the Diamond Princess as of Saturday.
A total of 11,806 people, including 653 from the Diamond Princess, have recovered and left hospital.
