TOKYO, Oct 16 (News On Japan) - The relocation of Arimasu Tobiru, a distinctive architectural landmark on Hijirizaka in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, was carried out between August and October after nearly two decades of construction.
Architect Keisuke Oka began building the reinforced concrete structure in 2005 as his own residence, designing it as a narrow, compact home with four floors above ground and one below on a site of just 40 square meters. Guided by his vision of “creating something that dances,” Oka infused the project with improvisational design elements, resulting in exterior walls decorated with unusual patterns and protrusions.
Although Arimasu Tobiru became a well-known local landmark, ongoing redevelopment in the surrounding area forced its relocation before construction was completed. The move was conducted in two stages — first eastward and then southward — effectively shifting the building to the southeast. The complex relocation process was completed under the watchful eyes of Oka and his team.
With the move now finished, work will continue on plumbing, foundation reinforcement, and interior construction. The building is scheduled to be completed in February of next year, marking the realization of Oka’s 20-year-long dream.
