TOKYO, Jul 18 (News On Japan) - Japan's third largest newspaper company, the Mainichi Shimbun, announced on Wednesday that it would cease newspaper deliveries in Toyama Prefecture by the end of September this year. Currently, only the morning edition is being published in Toyama, with the estimated circulation falling to 840 copies in 2023.
The decision to halt deliveries was influenced by the increasing costs of transporting the papers by truck from the Osaka factory, along with rising printing expenses.
Toyama will be the first prefecture in Japan where Mainichi Shimbun suspends delivery. The company stated, 'We will maintain our reporting presence in Toyama and continue to fulfill our role as a national newspaper even after October.'
