Scandal Forces Japan's Top Female Gymnast to Withdraw from Paris

TOKYO, Jul 21 (News On Japan) - Shoko Miyata, a 19-year-old gymnast and key member of Japan's women's gymnastics team, has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics due to smoking and drinking incidents.

The Japan Gymnastics Association held an emergency press conference to announce this decision, explaining that Miyata admitted to these actions after being confronted by her coach and parents.

Despite her outstanding performance at the All Japan Championships, securing her place in the Olympics, the decision was made following discussions about the misconduct.

The team will now compete with the four athletes already registered, as replacements are not permitted after the registration deadline except for illness or injury. Miyata expressed her deep regret and distress over the situation.
