TOKYO, Aug 23 (News On Japan) - Japan's Fair Trade Commission has issued a warning to major food manufacturer Nissin Foods for allegedly pressuring retailers nationwide to raise the selling price of its cup noodles, a potential violation of the Antimonopoly Act.
According to the Fair Trade Commission, Nissin Foods raised the prices of five products, including Cup Noodles, in 2022 and 2023. The company then pressured retailers, such as supermarkets across the country, to increase the selling prices and even set prices for special sale promotions.
Additionally, Nissin’s sales representatives visited some stores to check the prices in person.
On August 22, the Fair Trade Commission warned Nissin Foods that such actions might constitute "resale price maintenance," which is prohibited under the Antimonopoly Act.
