SHANGHAI, Apr 23 (News On Japan) - At the Shanghai Motor Show, which opened to the press on April 23rd ahead of its public run from April 27th to May 2nd, Toyota Motor Corporation revealed a series of new models, including a new electric vehicle, as it works to regain ground in the increasingly competitive Chinese market.
Among the key announcements was the world premiere of the latest "ES" sedan under the Lexus brand, marking a significant step in Toyota’s efforts to expand its premium lineup in China.
Toyota also introduced the "bZ7," a new electric vehicle developed specifically for the Chinese market in collaboration with a local joint venture partner. The model is scheduled for release within the next year and reflects Toyota's push to tailor its offerings to local demand. A major highlight of the bZ7 is its advanced driving support function, which allows the car to automatically change lanes and overtake vehicles when a destination is set in the navigation system—a feature that has been gaining popularity in the Chinese EV sector.
To support its EV expansion, Toyota has set up a new company in Shanghai focused on manufacturing Lexus electric vehicles and batteries. The company is currently building a dedicated factory to facilitate production. With growing uncertainty surrounding U.S. sales due to additional tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, Toyota is increasingly shifting its strategic focus toward China, viewing it as a vital market for future growth.
