Jun 30 (Kabuki In-Depth) - It is time to have a look at one of the Three Great Masterpieces of kabuki, Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami ("Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy").
The play is loosely based on the real-life figure Sugawara no Michizane, a renowned 9th-century scholar, poet, and calligrapher who was wrongfully exiled due to courtly intrigue. After his death, Michizane was deified as Tenjin, the god of scholarship. The play dramatizes his downfall and eventual spiritual triumph, blending history, legend, and stylized theatricality.
At its heart, Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami is a tale of loyalty, political betrayal, mistaken identity, and the transmission of secret knowledge—specifically the art of calligraphy. The "denju" (transmission of esoteric secrets) refers to the sacred tradition of passing down artistic and spiritual knowledge from master to disciple, often under life-or-death conditions.
