KOCHI, Jul 23 (News On Japan) - A dashcam captured the moment a car lost control and crashed inside a highway tunnel in Kochi Prefecture, with the driver possibly falling victim to hydroplaning.
The incident occurred as the vehicle, traveling in the lane next to the filming driver, rapidly accelerated and pulled away. Suddenly, it began spraying water and veering sharply left and right, its red taillights swerving in a zigzag pattern before veering widely to the right and then left again, finally coming to a stop by the roadside.
According to the driver who captured the footage, the car’s body began to shake side to side before crashing into the left tunnel wall. The impact sent the car bouncing to the right, where it rode up onto the curb, then struck the left wall again.
"It made a loud 'bang,' and it looked like it kept sliding along the wall," the filming driver recalled.
The cause of the crash is believed to be hydroplaning, where a layer of water builds up between the tires and the road on rain-slick surfaces, causing the vehicle to lose traction and making steering difficult.
The man in the car sustained only minor injuries. Police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
