TOKYO, Aug 23 (News On Japan) - Tokyo has released its first computer-generated video simulating the potential impact of a major eruption of Mount Fuji, showing how volcanic ash could paralyze the capital’s functions.
According to national government estimates, volcanic ash could begin falling on Tokyo as soon as one to two hours after an eruption. In the worst-case scenario, between 2 and 10 centimeters or more of ash would blanket large areas of the 23 wards and the Tama region.
To raise awareness of such risks, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government used generative AI for the first time to produce the video. It depicts trains being forced to halt, roads becoming impassable, and large numbers of people unable to return home. The footage also shows widespread power outages, communication disruptions, and severe strain on urban infrastructure.
Authorities are urging residents to prepare by keeping supplies such as masks and food in stock as part of everyday readiness for a potential eruption of Mount Fuji.
