NARA, Aug 27 (News On Japan) - Authorities in Nara carried out an awareness campaign on Tuesday urging visitors to handle the deer in Nara Park with care, as males tend to become more aggressive during this rutting season.
About 40 police officers and prefectural staff handed out booklets explaining how to behave around the animals and called on tourists to follow basic etiquette.
The issue of proper conduct has also drawn attention after a video circulated on social media last year showing a person believed to be a tourist assaulting a deer. Nara Park Office director Sota Idei said, “We hope people will take a leaflet, read it and that it will have an effect,” and, when asked whether antlers like these are dangerous, added, “Yes, they are. These are dangerous.”
The prefecture also warns that touching deer indiscriminately carries the risk of tick bites, and is urging visitors to keep an appropriate distance.
