TOKYO, Aug 30 (News On Japan) - Graffiti resembling alphabet letters was found carved into the East Shrine Gate at Meiji Jingu in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward on August 28, prompting a police investigation into a possible violation of the Cultural Properties Protection Law.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the graffiti was discovered on a load-bearing section of a column of the East Shrine Gate, which is designated by the national government as an Important Cultural Property. The markings, believed to have been incised with a sharp object, measured roughly 5 centimeters in height and 20 centimeters in width, with several alphabet-like characters visible in multiple places.
Police are investigating the circumstances in detail as a suspected offense under the Cultural Properties Protection Law.
