HIROSHIMA, Sep 14 (News On Japan) - The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced it will provide up to 536 billion yen in subsidies to support mass production of next-generation semiconductor memory by Micron Technology, a major U.S. chipmaker, at its plant in Hiroshima.
Micron plans to invest 1.5 trillion yen at its Higashihiroshima facility to manufacture high-speed, large-capacity memory, with commercial rollout scheduled to begin in 2028. METI will cover one-third of the total capital investment, aiming to leverage the production for Japan’s development of generative AI and autonomous driving technologies.
With the latest funding, total government support for Micron will rise to as much as 774.5 billion yen. This ranks third in scale, after subsidies provided to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) Kumamoto plant and to Rapidus Corporation’s new facility in Hokkaido.
