SHIZUOKA, Sep 22 (News On Japan) - Shizuoka Prefecture saw no fatalities from mountaineering accidents this summer for the first time in three years, while deaths from water-related accidents increased sharply.
According to the prefectural police, between July 1st and August 31st, 2025, there were 48 mountain accidents, 14 fewer than during the same period in 2024. The number of mountaineering deaths fell from seven in 2024 to zero in 2025, marking the first summer since 2022 without any fatalities.
About 70 percent of mountain accidents involve climbing Mount Fuji. Police believe the introduction of entry restrictions and mandatory pre-climb learning programs this season raised awareness of safety among climbers, contributing to the decline in accidents.
In contrast, water-related accidents rose compared with the previous year, with 25 cases recorded, up seven, and 12 fatalities, an increase of five.
