Japan's tourism and entertainment sector hit a new milestone following the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the official beginning of construction of the MGM Casino Resort.

The ceremony marked a historic moment for Japan's casino industry as it is the country's first large-scale entry into the development of integrated casino resorts. It's a huge milestone for Japan and MGM Osaka as they become the first resort casino to get official approval from the government under Japan’s 2018 Integrated Resort (IR) Implementation Law, the legislation that legalised casino gambling in the country.

The trillion-yen mega project is located on Yumeshima Island in Osaka. It is near the official site for the Grand Ring, which is known to be the largest wooden structure in the world and the venue for the EXPO 2025 in Japan. This new development will boost urban transformation in the country and also usher in a new era of technological innovation and economic growth. The project also includes minority investors and is billed to be completed by 2030. The opening date for the complex has also been set for autumn of 2030.

Given that the construction timeline clashes with the date for the Expo 2025, which is hosted on Yumeshima Island, the promoters have stated that construction and the use of heavy machinery will be reduced during the period of the Expo. The Expo 2025 will also help expand rail connectivity to the island as a new Osaka Metro Station has been opened to serve the Expo, while a new link is being added to the Kintetsu Nara line, which will eventually serve the resort once it's open.

With this approval and the progress of its extensive plans, it is clear that Japan is willing to redefine the future of its tourism and entertainment sector.
